AC Black Flag Resynced: Here's What's Actually Different

Ubisoft is remaking Black Flag. If you played the original, you're probably wondering what they changed and whether those changes are good or bad. Based on what's been confirmed so far, here's the breakdown.

The Combat Is Different Now

This is the biggest one. In Resynced, dual swords are Edward's main weapons. The Hidden Blade isn't a weapon you equip anymore. It's a contextual kill triggered when you break an opponent's defense.

I don't know how I feel about that yet. The Hidden Blade as a contextual takedown makes narrative sense. Edward's not supposed to be a trained Assassin for most of the game. But locking out weapon variety could feel restrictive if you liked mixing things up in the original. We'll see when reviews drop.

The Quality of Life Stuff Looks Good

Kenway's Fleet is now built directly into the game. You access it from the Hideout or Captain's Cabin. No phone required. This is unambiguously good. The original companion app is long dead and the whole situation was annoying anyway.

White whale events work the same way. Built into the game, not tied to online events. So no more missing them because the servers went offline three years ago.

The Jackdaw gets a new Pathfinder ability. Basically autopilot for sailing. Edward locks at the wheel and the ship follows a set course. Catch is you can't leave the wheel while it's active. Fine for traversal between islands. Not something you'd use mid-fight.

What's Returning From the Original

Social stealth is back. The original Wanted System with Pirate Hunters at high wanted levels is back. All original costumes return. Legendary Ships are in. Whaling, shark hunting, bell diving, and bar games including Checkers are all confirmed.

Online content shows up in the form of Anomalies, similar to what Shadows had.

Remappable controls are confirmed too. Should have been standard in 2013 but better late than never.

Legendary Ships Deep Dive Coming Later in May

Creative director Paul Fu and game director Richard Knight have a full Legendary Ships naval deep dive planned for later in May 2026. Given how much those fights defined the original's endgame, spending dedicated time on them seems right. Curious what they've changed there.

Price and Platforms

July 9, 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Collector's Edition is $200 and includes an Edward Kenway statue.

Two hundred bucks is steep. The statue better earn it.

Where I'm Landing

Black Flag is one of the best things Ubisoft ever made. The naval combat, the Caribbean, the shanties. If the remake preserves what worked and the combat changes don't feel like a downgrade, this could be worth revisiting.

The dual sword lock-in and contextual Hidden Blade are the things I'm watching most closely. Those could be fine changes or they could strip out flexibility people liked. The QoL improvements around Kenway's Fleet and white whales are clearly the right call though. No argument there.
