Kingdom Hearts 4 Has a Release Window and a Coco World, and I Have Questions
Kingdom Hearts 4 is coming late 2027. That's the news out of Disney's D23, where Square Enix finally showed new footage after four years of silence. Four years. The game was announced in 2022 and then basically nothing until June 2026, when we got the first real look. Now we have a window and a trailer. Progress.
What the Trailer Actually Shows
Sora's fighting enemies at a concert. He's riding sky rails. Mickey shows up. Goofy shows up. Hades shows up, which is interesting given he's an Olympus character and not obviously connected to anything in the new setup. The trailer doesn't explain that.
Most of the game takes place in Quadratum, which is basically Kingdom Hearts' version of Tokyo. If you played KH3's ending, you know Sora disappeared and ended up somewhere strange. Quadratum is that somewhere. It's the starting point for what Nomura is calling the Lost Master Arc, which is the new story arc this game kicks off. New arc means the Xehanort stuff is done and we're somewhere fresh. Theoretically.
The Coco World
One of the confirmed new worlds is based on the Pixar film Coco. Specifically the land of the dead. Visually that's going to be something, because Coco's afterlife is one of the more distinctive Pixar settings. Whether the world is good depends entirely on how much of the actual film's story they use versus just borrowing the aesthetics. Kingdom Hearts has a mixed record here. Some Disney worlds feel integrated. Some feel like you're doing chores in a theme park. No way to tell from a trailer which category Coco falls into.
The Wait Context
KH3 came out in 2019. We're looking at a 2027 release at the earliest. That's potentially eight years between mainline entries. The franchise is a billion-dollar Disney property with Tetsuya Nomura directing, and Nomura does not rush. This is the same guy who spent over a decade on Final Fantasy XV (when it was Versus XIII). Late 2027 is not a surprise. It's still a long time to wait.
The gap between the 2022 announcement and actual footage (June 2026) is also notable. Four years of basically nothing. That's a long time to keep a fanbase warm on announcement energy alone. The D23 trailer is the game confirming it still exists and has a shape.
Worth Caring About?
Depends on your relationship with the series. If you played KH3 and finished it, yeah, there's stuff here to be curious about. The Lost Master Arc is a genuine soft reset in terms of story scope, which could mean a cleaner entry point or could mean more of Nomura's layered lore that requires a wiki to follow.
If you bounced off the series before, nothing in this trailer suggests KH4 is the one that fixes what bothered you. It's still Sora, still Disney worlds, still Nomura writing the story. That's not a criticism, just calibration.
Late 2027. Mark the calendar or don't. At least now there's a date.
