Mario Kart World 1.6.0 Patch Notes: Bob-omb Blast Is Back and the Boomerang Got Nerfed

Nintendo dropped version 1.6.0 for Mario Kart World on March 30, and it's a meatier update than most. New battle mode, item rebalancing, and some quality of life fixes that actually matter. Here's what changed.

Bob-omb Blast Is the Real News

The headliner is Bob-omb Blast coming back from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It's a battle mode, so if you skipped those in the past you can keep skipping. But if you liked it before, it's here on Switch 2 now.

The mechanics are what you'd expect. You collect Bob-ombs and throw them at people. What's new is you can hold up to 10 at once, which is a lot. Throw distance is variable based on how long you hold the L Button. Short hold gets you a close lob. Long hold gets range. This could mean the mode has some actual skill expression instead of just chaotic spam. One possibility is it rewards positioning more than the MK8 version did. Hard to say without playing it.

Item Balance: Bullet Bill Up, Boomerang Down

Bullet Bill got two buffs. Increased lateral movement range across the board, and on Bowser's Castle, Starview Peak, and Rainbow Road specifically, it moves faster. The targeted speed buff is interesting. Those tracks must have had Bullet Bill feeling weak relative to how dangerous they are.

Boomerang got hit in two ways: range reduced and consecutive throws reduced. The Boomerang was always kind of busted in the right hands. This probably tones it down without removing it from the meta entirely. We'll see.

The Invincibility Change Is Bigger Than It Sounds

Invincibility time after spinning out or crashing now varies by character weight. Heavier characters get longer invincibility. This directly affects character selection math. Running a heavy character used to feel like a liability in chaotic situations. Now there's a concrete tradeoff in their favor.

Also fixed: Thwomps can no longer crush you while you're already spinning or crashing. You used to be able to get doubled up on punishment, which felt terrible. That's gone. On the flip side, lightning and Spiny Shells can now hit you immediately after a Thwomp crush. So you're not totally off the hook.

QoL Stuff Worth Knowing

Red Shells and Spiny Shells now give up to two warnings when they're approaching from behind in single player and 1p online/wireless modes. That's a nice heads up for players who don't have eyes in the back of their heads. Doesn't help in chaotic multi-player free-for-alls though.

Course roulette time in Online Play and Wireless Play was shortened. Good. Nobody wants to wait.

Worth Downloading?

Yes, obviously, it's a free patch. The Bob-omb Blast addition is the reason to care if you play battle modes. The invincibility change is the reason to care if you're optimizing character selection. The Boomerang nerf matters if you've been on the receiving end of it a lot lately.

Nothing here is revolutionary but it's a solid update. The item balance changes read like Nintendo actually watched competitive play and responded to what was broken.
