MW4 Beta Is Fixing That Annoying Restart Prompt Nobody Talks About
```html
Six years. That's how long Call of Duty players have been getting kicked to the main menu to apply an update before they can actually play. Six years of booting up, waiting, seeing that prompt, restarting, waiting again. It's one of those small friction points that everyone just... learned to live with. The MW4 beta is apparently doing something about it.
What's Actually Changing
If you're on PC or PS5 during the beta, you'll only see the restart prompt when an update is actively being pushed. Not every time you boot. Just when something is actually happening on the backend that requires it. That's a meaningful change if you play daily and you're used to being greeted by that screen more often than your game.
Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Switch 2 players don't get this during the beta. They're still on the old behavior. Activision says the full fix is expected across all platforms after launch, so the beta is essentially a limited rollout. Xbox and Switch 2 players are waiting for the real thing.
The Standalone Beta Thing
The MW4 beta is a standalone file. Not launching through the Call of Duty HQ launcher. This is the same approach they took with Modern Warfare 3 when that got offloaded into its own release. Whether this is a permanent direction or just how betas work now, I don't know. But if you hated navigating HQ to get into a specific game, this is at least cleaner for the beta period.
When You Can Play
Pre-loading opens August 20 at 9am PT. Beta itself starts August 21 at 11am PT on all platforms except Nintendo Switch 2. Switch 2 players join the second weekend, starting August 28. So if you're on Switch 2 and you want to try it before committing, you've got a week to watch everyone else play first.
The Campaign Level Thing Is Actually Interesting
The beta includes a campaign level. First time a Call of Duty beta has done that, apparently. If true, that's worth paying attention to. Betas are usually just multiplayer sandboxes. Letting people into the campaign before launch is either confidence in the story they're telling, or a deliberate push to get people talking about something other than the multiplayer meta. Could go either way.
Worth Downloading?
If you've been out of CoD for a while, the restart fix alone isn't a reason to come back. But if you're already planning to play MW4, the beta is free, it's standalone so you don't have to mess with HQ, and you get to see a piece of the campaign early. That's a reasonable ask for a free download.
The restart prompt thing is just... good housekeeping. It should have been fixed years ago. Better late than six years late, I guess.
