Why Modern Warfare Makes Sense
If you're going to make a Call of Duty movie, Modern Warfare is the obvious pick. The 2007 original basically defined a generation of shooters. That's the game that introduced Soap, Ghost, Captain Price, and Vladimir Makarov. Those characters stuck around through six mainline entries and remasters. Price especially has become weirdly iconic for a video game soldier in a series that treats its characters like disposable setpieces.
The 2019 reboot bet hard on that name recognition and it worked. Modern Warfare as a brand has more pull than anything else in the CoD catalog right now. Casual people who haven't touched the game since 2009 still remember "that Call of Duty" before they remember Black Ops or Warzone or whatever the hell came after.
Peter Berg and Taylor Sheridan
Berg directing and co-writing with Sheridan is an interesting combo. Berg has done military action before. Sheridan has been one of the more reliable writers working in prestige action-adjacent stuff for a while now. Together they're at least not a trainwreck combination on paper.
This could mean a grounded, serious tone rather than a popcorn spectacle. One possibility is they lean into the aesthetic of the 2019 reboot rather than the arcade excess of the franchise's peak years. Could also be completely wrong about that. No script details, no casting, no footage. Hard to say anything definitive right now.
The Timing Is Not a Coincidence
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 drops October 23, 2026 on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The movie hits June 30, 2028. That's a deliberate two-year window where MW4 gets people back into these characters and the movie cashes in on that familiarity later. Activision has also been quietly porting Black Ops 1 and 2 to PlayStation recently. Feels like part of the same play. Get the catalog out there, remind people the franchise is more than Warzone, then show up with a movie.
Paramount wants to be in business with whatever Call of Duty looks like in 2028. That math is pretty simple.
Will It Be Good
The last decade of video game movies has been genuinely better than the decade before it. Not all of them. But the bar has moved. A Modern Warfare movie with a director who knows action and a real writer attached is not DOA by default. That's a low bar, but it's a bar that a lot of these things fail to clear anyway.
Cast is unannounced. Script details are unknown. 2028 is still two years out. I'll actually judge it when there's something to judge. Right now it's an announcement that the movie exists and the creative choices attached to it could be a lot worse. We'll see.
