The Witcher 4 Is Coming in 2028 (And There's a Surprise Witcher 3 DLC Too)
CD Projekt Red dropped two announcements around Gamescom 2026 and I'll be honest, the one I care more about right now isn't The Witcher 4.
On August 24, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed in a video that The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window. That's the big one. But buried in the same news cycle: a new Witcher 3 DLC called Songs of the Past. Getting a full reveal at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25.

2028 for The Witcher 4. That's Not Surprising.
500+ developers on the project. A 2028 window. That math tracks. This is a big studio putting serious resources behind a game they clearly can't afford to screw up after the Cyberpunk 2077 launch situation.
Two years out means we're probably still in a phase where they have the bulk of it built but polish and optimization are still happening. One possibility is that 2028 is a conservative target and they'd rather underpromise. Another possibility is it's exactly when it'll ship. We have no way to know.
I'll say this: 500+ people is a lot of people. That's a large game. That's either a very long game, a very detailed game, or both.
The Witcher 3 DLC Is the Real Surprise
Nobody was expecting this. The Witcher 3 came out in 2015. Blood and Wine dropped in 2016. The game has been "done" for a decade. And now there's more.
Songs of the Past is described as having a dark story. Full reveal happens August 25 at Gamescom Opening Night Live. That's it. That's all we know.
Honestly? Good timing. If you're trying to keep people's attention on The Witcher franchise while The Witcher 4 is still two years away, releasing new Witcher 3 content is a smart move. Gets people back into the world. Reminds them why they cared in the first place.
Whether it's worth playing depends entirely on what it actually is. Tomorrow's reveal will tell us something. "Dark story" could mean anything from genuinely bleak Witcher lore to marketing fluff.
What To Actually Do Right Now
If you haven't played Witcher 3 yet, now's a weird time to start because you'll have more content coming. If you've already played it and loved it, Songs of the Past is probably worth watching the reveal for tomorrow.
For Witcher 4: put 2028 in your calendar and forget about it. There's nothing to track right now. Check back in 2027 when there's actual gameplay to evaluate.
I'm more interested in what Songs of the Past ends up being than anything else here. Unexpected Witcher 3 content from CD Projekt Red after ten years is the stranger story. A sequel with a 2028 window from a major studio is just... normal game development.
