FFXIV Comes to Switch 2 on August 4, and Yes, There's a Subscription Catch
Final Fantasy 14 hits Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026. Preorders open today, July 25. Yoshi-P announced it at Fan Fest Berlin wearing Bastion armor, which turns out to also be the tease for a new tank role. Classic Yoshi-P move, hiding a reveal inside a reveal.
The Subscription Situation (Read This First)
Here's the thing you need to know before you get excited: FFXIV on Switch 2 requires its own separate subscription. Not your existing subscription if you play on PC or PS5. A separate one.
If you're already subscribed somewhere else, you get 50% off. So it's not as bad as it sounds, but it's also not nothing. Square Enix said this decision came after "many months of discussions with Nintendo," which is a very polite way of saying Nintendo made this complicated and they worked it out eventually.
The good news: no Nintendo Switch Online subscription required. Whatever deal they worked out with Nintendo, they at least got that part sorted. You pay Square Enix, not Nintendo, for the subscription layer.
First month of sale is free of subscription charges. So if you want to try it, August is basically a free window to see if handheld FFXIV works for your life.
Why This Actually Matters
FFXIV has always been a game that fits weird into people's schedules. It's an MMO, so theoretically you need to sit down and play seriously. But a huge portion of what you actually do in this game is stuff that works fine in short sessions. Crafting, gathering, housing, roulettes. A lot of daily tasks take 20-30 minutes.
Handheld FFXIV makes sense for that. Playing in bed, on a commute, during lunch. The Switch 2 is powerful enough that this isn't going to be a compromised port situation. This is actually being built for it.
The separate subscription is annoying if you want to play across platforms without paying double. But if you're someone who would play primarily portable and just wants access, this is fine.
What Came Out of Berlin Fan Fest
The Switch 2 date wasn't the only thing. Yoshi-P showing up in Bastion armor wasn't just a costume choice. A new Bastion tank role was revealed at the same Fan Fest. New expansion called Evercold got announced. Final Fantasy 7 collaboration is coming.
That's a lot of announcements stacked into one event. They'd already confirmed Switch 2 plans at Anaheim Fan Fest back in April, so Berlin was the "here's the actual date and here's the business model" moment.
Should You Preorder Today
If you've been meaning to get into FFXIV and you own a Switch 2, the free first month makes this a low-risk entry point. August 4 gives you time to decide if handheld play is how you want to experience it before you commit to a subscription.
If you're already a subscriber on another platform, the 50% discount makes picking this up more reasonable, especially if portability matters to you.
If you're a PC main who plays at a desk and doesn't care about handhelds, this doesn't affect you at all. Nothing changes about your existing setup.
The dual-subscription requirement is the only real friction here. Square Enix knows it's not ideal. They said so implicitly by mentioning the months of negotiations. It's the price of getting the game onto the platform at all, apparently.
