GTA 6 Has No Microtransactions. Rockstar Said It Out Loud.
Rockstar confirmed two things in one Kinda Funny interview that people are going to keep screenshotting for years: GTA 6 launches without microtransactions, and it was made without generative AI. Both came out ahead of the GTA 6 Extended Look. Andy Cortez asked about real-money purchases directly. The answer was "no monetisations in this game." Greg Miller asked point-blank about generative AI. Also no.
The Microtransaction Confirmation (and the Asterisk)
This is the one everyone actually cares about. GTA Online turned Shark Cards into a multi-billion dollar side business and then spent years balancing around making you feel like you needed them. So "no monetisations" lands differently for GTA than it would for basically any other franchise.
At launch. That's the qualifier worth holding onto. GTA 6 hits November 19th on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Standard edition is £70. The Ultimate Edition is £90 and includes exclusive cosmetics, vehicles, weapons, shops, and services. Two of the named exclusives: a tattoo parlour called Electric Fang and a clothing store called Stock 305. That content unlocks chapter by chapter as you work through Jason and Lucia's story.
Standard edition buyers can purchase the Ultimate Edition upgrade separately after redeeming. So before the game is even out, there's already a two-tier structure. Whether the "no monetisations" answer covers the full lifespan of GTA Online 2 is a different question nobody can answer yet.
The AI Situation
No generative AI used in GTA 6's development. That's what Rockstar said. The timing is notable because Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, reportedly laid off its entire AI team earlier this year, including its head of AI. Strauss Zelnick has gone on record saying AI is incapable of creativity on its own.
Compare that to Krafton, Square Enix, and EA, all of which have been investing heavily going the other direction. Rockstar and Take-Two are staking out a pretty clear position here. Whether that's conviction or just smart PR before a major launch is something you can decide.
What's Actually New in the Game
Confirmed system changes so far: a reworked Wanted system, a changed carjacking system, and a new romance system. That's what's been talked about. Not much to dig into without hands-on time, but the romance system will almost certainly be the one people focus on once the game is out.
The Bottom Line
November 19th. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. £70 standard, £90 for the Ultimate Edition. No PC date announced.
The no-microtransactions confirmation is genuinely good news if it sticks. GTA Online's history makes "sticks" the word to watch. But Rockstar said it directly, on camera, in response to a direct question. That's more accountability than most studios bother with before launch. Worth noting. Worth remembering in six months when GTA Online is running.
