Halo: Campaign Evolved's Legendary Ending Is Basically Announcing a Halo 2 Remake
Halo: Campaign Evolved drops July 28. Already in early access if you grabbed Premium or Collector's Edition. IGN gave it a 7/10. Fine. But none of that is what people are actually talking about right now.
Beat It on Legendary. That Ending.
Finish the campaign on Legendary and you get a secret cutscene with Sergeant Johnson, who drops the line "See you in the sequel." Then a post-credits scene plays: 343 Guilty Spark flying toward a planet.

This is not subtle.
What They're Telegraphing
Campaign Evolved is a full remake of the original Halo, built on Unreal Engine. Sergeant Johnson is a major Halo 2 character. "See you in the sequel" isn't a throwaway line. And 343 Guilty Spark flying toward a planet after credits... one possibility is that planet is Earth, which is exactly where Halo 2 opens.
If the play is campaign remakes done one at a time on Unreal Engine, this ending is the first signal of what's next in that queue.
The Ekur Cancellation Makes This Make More Sense
Halo Studios and Certain Affinity just killed a multiplayer project codenamed Ekur. Rebs Gaming and Windows Central both reported it. So that lane is closed.
Campaign-focused development is apparently the actual strategy. The secret ending in Campaign Evolved suggests they're already committing to it.
What a Halo 2 Remake Would Actually Mean
Halo 2 launched on Xbox in 2004. It got remastered for the Master Chief Collection in 2014, but that was a remaster. New cutscenes, updated visuals, same engine underneath. A full Campaign Evolved style rebuild is a different thing entirely.
Worth remembering: Halo 2's campaign famously ends mid-story. There's a lot of unfinished business in that game that a full remake could actually address. Or not. But the bones are there.
The Short Version
