Mario Kart World 1.7.0 Added New Routes. It Also Changed Items Without Telling You.

Nine months in, Mario Kart World finally got some new content. Version 1.7.0 dropped June 30 with two new Knockout Tour rally routes. That's the headline Nintendo wanted. Here's the more interesting story: they also changed how items work, and it's not in the patch notes.

What's Actually New

Two new routes for Knockout Tour mode. Drill Rally runs between Wario Shipyard and Bowser's Castle. Boomerang Rally goes from Salty Salty Speedway to Whistlestop Summit. Nintendo says more are coming in future updates.

Important distinction: these are rally routes, not new race tracks. After a full year of Mario Kart World, there are still zero new tracks added to the base game. 14.7 million copies sold as of March 2026, and the update strategy so far is extra modes, not extra courses. Whether that changes is anyone's guess.

The Item Change Nobody's Talking About

This is the actually interesting part. Nintendo quietly changed item distribution for 1st place and didn't mention it in the official patch notes.

For the first 20 seconds of a race, players in 1st place now pull items as if they're sitting in 5th place out of 12 or 24. That means Triple Mushrooms. That means Boo. The kind of items you used to only get while losing.

This is a real balance shift. The opening of a race is where leads get built and broken. Giving 1st place better items early means the initial gap is harder to close from behind. Whether that's good depends on how much you think Mario Kart should reward being in front versus punishing it. I lean toward this being a reasonable change. Getting a green shell in 1st while the pack has mushrooms was always annoying.

That Nintendo didn't put this in the patch notes is strange. It affects every race. Either they thought nobody would notice, or they're quietly testing it. Could mean more undocumented tweaks are in there too.

Balance and Fixes

The update raises acceleration on low-acceleration characters and vehicles. Also bumps gliding speed for high-speed characters and some others. If you've been running a heavy build that felt sluggish off the line, worth testing again.

A new ramp got added to the Airship Fortress to Bowser's Castle route. Small detail, but could open up line variations.

Bug side: Time Trial timers after finishing were wrong and are now fixed. A wall clip in Bowser's Castle is patched. A bug that double-dipped your coins on the route heading east from Peach Stadium is gone.

Photo Mode got sticker support via touch or mouse. Thai language support is in.

Worth Caring About?

If you're still playing, yeah. The new rally routes give Knockout Tour some variety, and the item change makes early-race dynamics feel a bit different. If you stepped away hoping for new tracks, this isn't that. Nintendo's signal so far is that Knockout Tour content is the update path, not course packs.

Either way, the hidden item change is worth knowing about. It's in every race whether you're paying attention or not.
